Work out flooring quantities in minutes, on site

Add every room, set your wastage allowance and box coverage, and this calculator gives you the total area, the area including waste, how many boxes to order and the estimated material cost — in metric or imperial.

    How to use it

    • Add each room's length and width, choosing the unit for each.
    • Set a wastage allowance — 10% is a common starting point, more for diagonal or complex layouts.
    • Enter the coverage per box and the price per square metre or square foot to get a material cost estimate.

    The formula

Total Area = Sum of (Room Length × Room Width) Area With Waste = Total Area × (1 + Wastage %) Boxes Needed = ROUND UP(Area With Waste ÷ Box Coverage) Material Cost = Area With Waste × Price per Unit Area

    Worked example

A 4m × 3m room (12 m²) with 10% wastage needs 13.2 m² of flooring. At 2.2 m² per box, that's 6 boxes. At $45/m², estimated material cost is $594.

Actual material requirements can vary due to waste, installation method, site conditions, manufacturer specifications, local codes and measurement accuracy. Always confirm quantities with your supplier before ordering.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much wastage allowance should I use?

10% is a common default for straightforward rectangular rooms. Increase it for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, lots of cuts around fixtures, or offcuts you can't reuse.

Can I add more than one room?

Yes — use 'Add Another Room' for as many rooms as you need. All room areas are combined before wastage and boxes are calculated.

Does this account for pattern matching or plank direction?

No — it's a straightforward area-based estimate. For patterned or directional installs, add extra wastage to cover extra cuts.
